June 2026 News: HERO ELD Revoked, Motus System Bugs, and HOS Waivers

Hey there, fellow road warriors and owner-operators!

It’s June 8th, 2026, and if you feel like the regulatory landscape is shifting under your tires faster than a downhill grade, you’re not alone. Between the FMCSA pulling the plug on certain tech and launching a brand-new registration system that, let’s be honest, has a few "growing pains," there is a lot to keep track of this month.

At The Trucker Consultant, our goal is to keep you profitable with fewer headaches. That means staying ahead of the compliance curve so you don't find yourself sitting on the shoulder with an "Out-of-Service" (OOS) sticker on your window.

Today, we're breaking down the three biggest news items hitting the industry right now: the HERO ELD revocation, the Motus registration system bugs, and some much-needed HOS relief for fertilizer haulers.

1. The HERO ELD Shutdown: July 2nd is the Hard Deadline

If you are using the HERO ELD (Model HRS, ID HRS205), stop what you’re doing for a second and check your calendar.

Back on June 2nd, the FMCSA officially revoked HERO ELD from the list of registered devices. Why? It turns out the device failed to meet the minimum technical requirements set by the federal government. This isn't just a slap on the wrist for the manufacturer; it’s a major compliance hurdle for you.

What You Need to Know

The FMCSA has given a 30-day "grace period" that ends on July 2, 2026.

  • Before July 2nd: If a safety official stops you and sees you’re using HERO, they are encouraged not to cite you for having "No Record of Duty Status." However, you should be prepared to show paper logs or alternative logging software to prove your hours are legal.
  • On and After July 2nd: The honeymoon is over. If you are still using HERO ELD after July 2nd, you will be cited for operating without an ELD (Violation 395.8(a)(1)). Even worse, you’ll be placed Out-of-Service immediately.

Your Move

Don't wait until July 1st to scramble for a new device. The demand for replacement ELDs often spikes right before these deadlines, leading to shipping delays.

  1. Check the List: Head over to the FMCSA Registered ELDs List and pick a replacement that is currently in good standing.
  2. Switch to Paper (Temporarily): While you wait for your new hardware, you can legally use paper logs for up to 8 days, or longer if you've requested an extension.
  3. Get a Plan: If this transition feels overwhelming, check out our Starter Compliance Plan to make sure you’re swapping devices the right way without losing your data.

2. Motus System Meltdown: Navigating Registration Bugs

The FMCSA recently rolled out its new registration platform, Motus, which is supposed to replace the clunky legacy systems we've all grown to "love" (or hate) over the years. This Phase II rollout, which hit full stride in late May and early June, was intended to be a secure, mobile-friendly dashboard for all things USDOT.

In reality? It's been a bit of a mess.

Common "Bugs" Reported in June 2026

We’ve been hearing from carriers across the country about a few recurring issues that are slowing down business:

  • Identity Verification Glitches: Many users are getting stuck in an endless loop while trying to verify their identity to link their existing DOT numbers.
  • Data Mismatches: Some carriers have reported that after migrating to Motus, their fleet size or IFTA status appears incorrectly, which can cause red flags during audits.
  • Login Lockouts: If your old FMCSA Portal credentials didn't transfer perfectly, you might find yourself locked out of your own account just when you need to perform a MCS-150 Biennial Update.

How to Handle the Bugs

FMCSA is aware of these issues, but they aren't exactly handing out free passes. If you need to update your registration or apply for new authority, here’s how to stay safe:

  • Document Everything: If the system gives you an error code, take a screenshot. If you can’t log in, keep a log of the dates and times you tried. This is your "get out of jail free" card if an auditor asks why your info isn't current.
  • Use the Help Desk: Yes, the wait times are long, but getting a ticket number is crucial for your records.
  • Let Us Help: We deal with DOT Numbers and MCS-150 updates daily. If Motus is giving you a headache, we can help navigate the technical hurdles so you don't face penalties for "failure to register."

3. Relief in Sight: HOS Waivers for Fertilizer Haulers

Finally, some good news! To keep up with the summer agricultural demands, the FMCSA has extended a temporary Hours-of-Service (HOS) waiver for fertilizer haulers across 35 states.

The Details

This waiver is effective now and is scheduled to last until late August 2026. It allows drivers transporting fertilizer to exceed the standard driving windows to ensure that farmers have the supplies they need during this critical growing season.

The Rules (Because there are always rules)

Just because there’s a waiver doesn't mean it’s "Wild West" time on the road.

  1. 34-Hour Restart: You still need to ensure you are getting adequate rest. The waiver typically relaxes the 11 and 14-hour rules, but fatigue is still a safety violation.
  2. State Specific: Make sure your route stays within the 35 approved states. If you cross into a state not covered by the emergency declaration, the standard HOS rules apply the second you cross that line.
  3. Documentation: Keep a physical or digital copy of the FMCSA Emergency Declaration in your cab. If you get pulled over, being able to point to the specific waiver can save you a lot of time and potential citations.

Consultant’s Corner: Stay Proactive, Not Reactive

Whether it’s a revoked ELD or a buggy registration system, the common theme this June is uncertainty. In the trucking business, uncertainty usually translates to lost revenue.

Here is my professional advice for this month: Audit your own compliance today.

Don’t wait for a roadside inspection to find out that your ELD isn't compliant or that your Motus account didn't migrate correctly. Take 15 minutes this week to:

  1. Verify your ELD brand and model.
  2. Log into the Motus system (or attempt to) to ensure your data is accurate.
  3. Check your IFTA and MCS-150 deadlines.

If you find something that doesn't look right, don't panic. We offer everything from a Free 15-minute Consultation to full 1-on-1 Consulting Packages. We’ve seen it all, and we know how to fix it without it costing you your business.

Stay safe out there, keep those wheels turning, and remember: you don’t have to navigate these regulations alone!
